Sic Alps release three shards of vivacious pop on new 12″ EP

29 Mar

Orange Sunshine! Blue Diamonds! Black Potatoes! Sic Alps are back! and they have burst onto the scene in a positively ebullient mood and with new tunes to boot.

Following their self-titled full length of last year, She’s On Top is a 12″ single, a B-12-booster shot extract straight from the heart of Sic Alps.

This is how the other half lives, laughs and loves. It’s fun and exciting, a picture from the airplane. Sic Alps are like you. They’re your friends — the better, smarter, faster, stronger ones. When they get back from their run, they’re friendly and will show you how the guitar works. Whoops, they picked it up and three songs fell out. Time for a 12″ single, and time to show the world the steel-plate resolve and wide, sparkling decks of the good ship Sic Alps. These three guns is all they need and now they’ve maneuvered into the power position.

“She’s On Top” will send you up shaking, laughing so hard you’re crying, and how you come down depends on your chemistry. Shards of pop…we may need pincers. “Carrie Jean” is a noirish creeper, another one about girlish allure. Now, “Biz Bag” blew the door open, jet-blast style, finishing with a bitter kiss ‘n’ giggle. And on this song, a new genre is spawned: power-brisk.

To sum up: all three songs = one solid blast and threaten to start and end parties with their vitality and charms. And you can’t stop playing them, that’s what records are for after all.

Drag City will release She’s On Top on 20 May 2013 and it’s all wrapped in a 12″ single sleeve inspired by and incorporating a Digger’s photograph. To request your digital promo copy, please do not hesitate to get in touch in the usual ways.

“Grubby and textured, plaintive and minimal or playful and full-on, Sic Alps always convince, especially on “Lazee Sun”, which could be The Kinks, had Harry Smith recorded them for his folk anthology, and the frosted lullaby “See You On The Slopes– UNCUT

“Pure psych-pop magic. The mixture of strings and tambourines in Moviehead is deliciously psychedelic and energetic.– THE LINE OF BEST FIT

Sic Alps’ fifth record’s diversity is what makes it stand alone. For an album based in grunge-tinged indie, it even has its beautiful moments – album closer ‘See You On the Slopes’ could be your first dance.” – LOUD AND QUIET

The pastoral strings of ‘Glyphs’ are a sumptuous garnish to the sort of stoned psychedelia Love As Laughter used to churn out so effortlessly, while the cocksure ‘Wake Up, It’s Over II’ pours gloopy fuzz over its slow-burning rough edges. A couple of piano-led downers bring us to a close; bruised and bleeding, but breathlessly exhilarated.” – THE FLY

Iron Tongue: Arkansas Southern Rock Miscreants Join Neurot Recordings; Album Details Revealed

29 Mar

Neurot Recordings is pleased to release the debut from Arkansas southern rock collective IRON TONGUE.

Fronted by Chris “CT” Terry, the founding frontman of sludge legion Rwake, IRON TONGUE formed when a group of veteran players with diverse musical backgrounds found a common interest in the need to get down and dirty and way, way gone.

Churning a soulful blend of girthy, heavily amped, blues-based rock, IRON TONGUE aren’t singing of magical moonlit escapades. The band offer up songs of pain, regret and heartache that recall everything from the proto-metal stomp of Blue Cheer and Grand Funk to the darkest hours of Kiss, Deep Purple, Buddy Guy and ‘Skynyrd. Having spent over three years performing steadily throughout the South, IRON TONGUE has traversed the Midwest and East Coast with Memphis kindred spirits The Dirty Streets, in addition to sharing bills with the likes of Black Tusk, Scott Kelly, The Sword, High on Fire, Crowbar, The Body, Lita Ford and fellow Arkansans Pallbearer. A split 7” with The Dirty Streets, featuring a ballsy version of KISS’s “Two Timer” served as a precursor to the creation their debut full-length for Neurot.

Entitled The Dogs Have Barked, The Birds Have Flown, the seven track offering was recorded and produced by soundsmith Billy Anderson (Melvins, Sleep, Neurosis, etc) at IRON TONGUE guitarist Jason Tedford’s Wolfman Studios. Steve Von Till describes the album as “a solid slab of balls to the wall of shameless rock, with a power and an edge and soul that rarely exists in music today,”.

The Dogs Have Barked, The Birds Have Flown is set for release via Neurot Recordings on May 27th in the UK/EU.

Comments drummer Stan James of joining the Neurot family: “IRON TONGUE is excited and honored to be a part of the Neurot team! We are looking forward to working hard every step of the way and we are committed to making music that everyone will be proud of.

Further info on IRON TONGUE, including tour dates, will be announced in the coming weeks.

OM’s meditative ‘Addis’ transformed into hypnotic dubplate courtesy of Alpha & Omega

29 Mar

Dubplates

Just as OM’s Advaitic Songs achieved a level of composition that was impossible to forsee, it might come as a surprise to hear that they handed over the track ‘Addis’ from their most recent long player for a dubplate reworking from UK roots and dub legends Alpha & Omega. Then again, given OM’s longstanding mantra when it comes to creating bass-heavy and sensually rhythmic songs, perhaps it should not.

The Addis dubplate has already emerged from other vibrational dimensions to ours, but what’s one without another? That’s right, a second dubplate is on the way, also via Alpha & Omega, for Advaitic Songs’ “Gethsemane” – but for that you’ll have to wait until May 20th.

Since providing two new dubplates, one would assume Al Cisneros could use a rest. Fortunately for us, Al rests by making more music- stay alert and at the ready for “Ark Procession” b/w “Jericho” the first Al Cisneros 10″ offering for Drag City, in June.

2 dubplates – Songs from the album Advaitic Songs – remixed by Alpha & Omega.

Addis dubplate:

Side 1: Ababa Dub

Side 2: Addis Ababa

Gethsemane dubplate:

Side 1: Garden of Gethsemane

Side 2: Garden of Dub

‘Addis‘ was released on Drag City last week on 18 March with ‘Gethsemane’ released on 20 May.

OM also have live shows confirmed, here are the tour dates:

Southern Records/Outer Himalayan announce the first in a series of Rudimentary Peni reissues

29 Mar

Somewhat topically, Southern Records have announced the details of the first Rudimentary Peni reissue in a new series. Re-released in May 2013 will be Pope Adrian 37th Psychristiatric – a concept album originally released in 1995.

Much like the Crassical series, the aim is to make available these vital albums from a punk band who really are unique in their musical style and approach, especially with their witty and macabre lyrics and unmistakable artwork.

ABOUT THE ALBUM…

It has been rumoured that the album was written while lead singer/guitarist Nick Blinko was being detained in a psychiatric hospital under Section 3 of the UK 1983 Mental Health Act. The subject matter of the album is purported to be based on the delusions Blinko was experiencing at the time, particularly the idea that he was to assume the Papcy, and become “Pope Adrian 37th”, the second English pope in history. The first, Nicholas Breakspeare, was coincidentally from Blinko’s hometown of Abbotts Langley.

Musically, Pope Adrian 37th Psychristiatric has the band venturing into expanded song structures (their typical song prior to this being one or two minutes long) and relentless, cyclical riffs. The repetitive lyrical phrases and blistering sounds create an oppressive and compelling atmosphere which does much to reinforce the ideas of obsession which shroud both the concept and mythology of this utterly unique album.

SPECIFICS ABOUT THE REISSUE…

Pope Adrian 37th Psychristiatric marks the first in a regular series where Rudimentary Peni releases will be remastered from original analogue tapes and reissued.

This also marks the first time this album has been released on LP. The vinyl edition on 180gm black vinyl with gatefold sleeve, full-size 16 page art book of Nick Blinko artworks, and a bonus poster. The CD edition comes in a gatefold wallet with 16 page art book also.

Next in the series will be Cacophony (1987) but more will be revealed about that in good time. Other records coming up in the series include:

Rudimentary Peni – Death Church (Southern Records/Outer Himalayan) LP/CD reissue

Rudimentary Peni – The EPs of RP (Southern Records/Outer Himalayan) LP/CD reissue

Rudimentary Peni – The Underclass (Southern Records/Outer Himalayan) LP/CD reissue

Rudimentary Peni – Archaic (Southern Records/Outer Himalayan) LP/CD reissue

Rudimentary Peni – Echoes Of Anguish (Southern Records/Outer Himalayan) LP/CD reissue

AGRIMONIA: details of Southern Lord debut emerge; album-opener streaming at Pitchfork

29 Mar

The name of Gothenburg-based quintet AGRIMONIA will reverberate through the masses throughout the coming months as their third LP, and first for Southern Lord, is subject to be released onto the masses this May 2013.

AGRIMONIA has lead a fruitful existence since their 2005 foundation, a steady diet of live appearances and European tours being an immediate part of the band’s ethos from day one, the ranks of the band featuring members of other notable Swedish infiltrators including Martyrdöd, Skitsystem, At the Gates and others. Their initial recording — a massive nearly hour-long undertaking — spread through the post-rock and crust legions, eventually seeing official release on European label Skuld Releases. Following their follow-up LP — the 2010-released Host Of The Winged, released again via Skuld alongside a CD release on US crust/punk mainstays Profane Existence — the band traversed on American and Mexican soil for the first time with a brief but rampant West Coast North American tour.

Having signed with Southern Lord mid-2012, AGRIMONIA bunkered into the studio over the turn of the year to record their label debut Rites Of Separation, the final product then mixed by mastermind Fredrik Nordstrom at infamous Studio Fredman (At The Gates, Opeth, Arch Enemy). With just seconds short of a full hour of material harnessed, the completed recordings boast the most mammoth and varied sounds in the band’s already diversified and expansive sound, their bustling slow-motion post-rock builds displayed with the most epic refinement. The band’s unconcealed crustpunk ethos and scathing elements shine through the pristine devastation, with elements of Summoning, Damad, Pelican, Opeth, Crisis, Bolt Thrower, Nausea and countless more shining within AGRIMONIA’s crushing, poignant and unique new LP.

Experience the opening track to Rites Of Separation, the nearly eleven-minute gargantuan “Talion” via Pitchfork:

Rites Of Separation will see a UK/EU release on May 6 via Southern Lord. Expect continuous album and tour updates on this label priority throughout 2013.

Rites Of Separation Track Listing:

1. Talion

2. Hunted

3. While Life Lies

4. The Battle Fought

Neurosis announce European tour in support of Honor Found In Decay

29 Mar

(photo credit Tim Bugbee, Tinnitus Photography)

It is said that great art has the power to take us outside of ourselves and bring us closer to ourselves simultaneously. Few bands have accomplished this rare feat on a more profound and consistent basis than NEUROSIS. For nearly three decades, their music has touched the hearts and minds of men and women seeking contact with something beyond the physical world, something intangible, something that expresses the inner tumult of the human condition in a way that transcends time and space. Something that not only provokes questions but maybe even hints at answers.

Since 1985 this matchless force has surpassed the boundaries of any genre, never ceasing to mutate and progress their songwriting and sonic delivery, and never failing to mesmerise audiences both in the studio and onstage.

In 2012 NEUROSIS returned with the monumental release of their tenth studio album, Honor Found In Decay which went on to receive countless plaudits from the press on a global scale, and was positioned highly in end of year polls – reaffirming why NEUROSIS remain one of the most important heavy acts in existence. But their journey does not stop here, for NEUROSIS have announced a full European tour in support of the album and we are especially delighted to announce the dates today…

NEUROSIS MAY SHOWS & EU TOUR DATES:

24.05/2013 ES, Barcelona – Primavera Sound Festival 2013

28.06.2013 SWE, Norköpping – Bravalla Festival

29.06.2013 – DAY OFF

30.06.2013 PL, Warsaw – Palladium

06.07.2013 CH, Zürich – Rote Fabrik

07.07.2013 FR, Belfort – Eurockeennes festival

Such an extensive continental tour is a rare occurance for NEUROSIS and therefore must be celebrated and savoured.

As a taste of what is to come, watch and share this immense live footage performing ‘At The Well’ live in Oakland on New Years Eve.

Here is the direct link >>> http://youtu.be/Kbux2-pkzt8.

It is the overwhelming physicality of their monolithic riffs that remains their most incisive musical tool. An underlying sense of disquiet and existential yearning has long thrummed at the heart of Neurosis, but even by their usual standards the grim restlessness of the opener, All Rage in Gold, packs a devastating punch. On the extraordinary dynamic peaks and troughs of At the Well, the band wield near-silence as a weapon, its unsettling fragility emerging from clouds of ugly distortion and snail’s-pace tribal percussion. Similarly, the sprawling Casting of the Ages forces the subtle and the grotesque together in an exhilarating but doom-laden embrace. In less skilful hands, this relentless sonic oppression would be gruelling, but by expressing human frailty with such visceral abandon, Neurosis have once again turned darkness into euphoria.” – 4/5 GUARDIAN

“Neurosis have taken a more complex route: skillfully weaving strains of folk, prog and even chilled ambience into their patented doom metal/hardcore tapestry and often obtaining staggering results in the process…Low poiints are refreshingly absent, while at the record’s heart are two epic, 10 minute set pieces. The maximum heaviosity of Casting Of The Ages initially seems an impossible act to follow, yet the breathtaking, Porcupine Tree-style scope of My Heart For Deliverance manages it with style to spare, throwing down the gauntlet for all would-be-future-shaping rock’n’roll alchemists into the bargain.” 4/5 RECORD COLLECTOR

“Craggy riffs and swathed in misty synthesiser, and a firm control of dynamics lend “Bleeding The Pigs” and “Casting Of The Ages” a compelling sense of ebb and flow, raging intensity giving way to sombre piano lamentations and vocalist Scott kelly’s weathered, Tom Waits growl.– 8/10 UNCUT

“Another spiritual journey into the very heart of mankind. Completely and utterly mind-blowing.” – METAL HAMMER

“The most stunning aspects of ‘Honor Found In Decay’ come from Neurosis’ grasp of dynamics…as ever, in the hands of these uncompromising sorcerers, true heaviness can be as much about the directness as disorientation, and as much about the sinister rumble as an unearthly roar.” – 5/5 TERRORIZER

A Storm Of Light to unleash new full-length via Southern Lord

29 Mar

Following their 2011 album As The Valley Of Death Becomes Us, Our Silver Memories Fade and a rapturous response to their 2012 shows with the likes of Converge, Sleep, Corrosion Of Conformity, Torche and Valient Thor – A Storm Of Light will return this year with a brand new record – and we are proud to announce that Southern Lord will be releasing it.

A Storm Of Light’s third album As The Valley Of Death Becomes Us, Our Silver Memories Fade was the band’s heaviest and most dynamic release to date bringing together the colossal energies and forces of the group, not to mention an assemblage of prestigious guests.

The new album, entitled Nations to Flames, was recorded with Travis Kammeyer (Fahrenheit Studios) and mixed with Matt Bayles (Red Room) and is currently being mastered ready for our listening pleasure later this year.

The band are giving very little away as yet but did state that the music on the record is “faster, much darker and noisier” and they also revealed that…”on this record, we have finally found ourselves” – which gives us much to look forward to.

More information as well as track-listing, artwork and audio will be revealed in due course.

So now, all we can do is await the new record with baited breath…

HESSIAN sign to Southern Lord to release their debut album

29 Mar

When confronted with the imminent destruction of our world, do we turn our heads and go our ways? Or do we look for means to channel our rage, to give voice to that frustration and turn it into a weapon? Do we search for what is real and worthwhile in the debris? Something that goes for the throat and doesn’t let go until the last drop is spilled?

Buried deep in the consciousness of its four members at the time, it was these exact questions that gave rise to Belgium’s Hessian three years ago. From the onset, the combined musical backgrounds of guitarist Levy Seynaeve (Amenra), drummer Tim Bryon (The Black Heart Rebellion), singer Bram Coussement and bass player Kenneth Vanhoutte fell effortlessly into place, pushing a sound that was at once pummeling, devouring and empowering across the rural fields where they started rehearsing.

After a well received debut EP, a split 7″ with Amenra, a split LP with Pale Creation on Magic Bullet Records and countless shows throughout Europe, Hessian have found a new home, Southern Lord and are ready to unleash their debut album, Manégarmr to the masses. The album will be released in the UK/EU on 13 May 2013.

Named after the wolf that – in Norwegian mythology – devours the sun every night, their debut record focuses both sonically and lyrically on the endless cycles of destruction that are imminent to this life and the world in which we live. From the soaring take-off of “Ascension”, via the treacherous calm of central pieces “Vāmācāra” and “Father of Greed”, to the merciless onslaught that is “Mother of Time”. With towering guitars, frenzied drum patterns and savage vocals that sound like the howl of the lone wolf, Manègarmr is a furious blizzard of cold Black Metal, violently crashing into a maelstrom of ultra-metallic dark hardcore.

Manègarmr ultimately takes the listener on a journey that is at once haunting, draining and exhilarating.

Mixed by the infamous Tomas Skogsberg (Entombed, Unleashed, Dismember) at Sunlight Studios in Sweden and mastered by Brad Boatright (Sleep, High on Fire, Nails).
