Ipecac to release a brand new Melvins remix album!

24 Jul

This autumn, the mighty MELVINS will release a record like never before entitled Chicken Switch.  This record is a 15-song remix CD with a twist because unlike usual remix CDs where the re-mixer is given a single track to work with, for Chicken Switch each re-mixer was given a full album to work with and pull from to create their track (and in some cases, more than one full album was used as source material). The song names were also newly selected by their re-mixer and here they are:

Track Listing
1.Washmachine Sk8tronics – Eye Yamatsuka
2.Emperor Twaddle Remix – Christoph Heemann
3.She Chokes Her Dying Breath and Does It In My Face – V/VM
4.AAHHH… – John Duncan
5.Linkshänder – Matmos
6.EggNog Trilogy” i)She’s Ivanhoe ii)Cancer iii)Inebriated – Lee Ranaldo
8.Prick Concrete / Revolution M – David Scott Stone
9.Queen (Electroclash Remix) – Panacea
10.The Silky Apple Butter of Youth – Sunroof!
11.4th Floor Hellcopter – Kawabata Makoto
12.disp_tx_skel_mach_murx – Farmersmanual
13.Overgoat – Void Manes
14.Over from Under the Dog, Girl & Boy Treatment – RLW
15.Hard Revenge Milly Bloody Battle VS. The Melvins Ozmatized Gore Police (Feat: Cardopusher of the Five Deadly Venoms) – Speedranch

As you can see, for the re-mixers themselves the band picked an almighty motley crew: from Japanoise legend Merzbow to breakcore king Speedranch, Sonic Youth moonlighter Lee Ranaldo to dark electro fellow Panacea.

I strongly recommend this album. Speedranch and Eye Yamatsuka are particularly strong remixes.

The question remains, whatever next for the Melvins?

Supersonic Festival presents – Corrupted, Thorr’s Hammer and The Accused in London

20 Jul
Picture 1
The inspiring ladies at Capsule have astounded us again by organising an incredible not-to-be-missed event in London this coming Sunday (26 July)

It is with great honor that Supersonic Festival present the first UK shows for the notorious Japanese band CORRUPTED joined by newly reformed cult doom outfit featuring Sunn 0))) duo Stephen O’Malley and Greg Anderson THORR’S HAMMER + splatter rock band THE ACCüSED.

Corrupted – Osaka Japan
Corrupted is THE absolute reference in terms of monolithic and experimental funeral doom. The band has become legendary: consistently refusing interviews and photo shoots, the band has only been seen in Europe during a discreet tour in 2000 and a couple of appearances last year, this will be their first show in the UK.

Corrupted’s music is bleak, monumental and slow as a pachyderm… Extraordinary brutal riffs-drones played in a very low guitar/bass duo, as well as a drummer who maintains a brontosaurus like striking force on improbable slow tempos serve as a morbid box for a singer with an inimitable tone: guttural and abysmal at will, he declaims apocalyptic texts in Spanish (!!!). The band sometime uses long instrumental, melancholic breaks that admirably contrast with the force of their sound.

Thorr’s Hammer- US/NORWAY/UK
Greg Anderson & Stephen O’Malley presents their maiden voyage into darkeness: the cult recordings by the black doom act Thorr’s Hammer. Thorr’s Hammer is raw nihilistic doom featuring the unbelievable vocals of Norwegian goddess Runhild Gammelsæter. Presented in her native Norwegian tongue, Runhild Gammelsæters’ gutteral dark vocals are contrasted by beautiful singing creating a huanting atmosphere. Funeral dirge is provided by the collaberation of Stephen O’Malley (ex-Burning Witch/Sunn 0))) ) and Greg Anderson (ex-Engine Kid/SUNN0)))/Goatsnake) Jamie Sykes (ex-Burning WitchWardrums, ex-CODENAME F.A.D.G.E.) and Guy Pinhas (Beaver, The Obsessed, Goatsnake, Melvins, etc). This union is raw, low and heavy as fuck, reminiscent of elder gods HELLHAMMER/CELTIC FROST,SABBATH, AND VENOM.

The Accüsed – US
Formed in 1981 in Oak Harbor, Washington by bassist Chibon ‘Chewy’ Batterman, Dana Collins and guitarist Tom Niemeyer. John Dahlin was the vocalist from 1982-1984. The addition of Blaine Cook (frontman of Seattle hardcore punk group The Fartz) fit nicely into the group’s migration towards a more heavy metal-based sound. In 1984, The band dubbed their style “splatter rock,” in homage to their favorite genre of horror films. Their hybrid musical formula was distinguishable by Blaine’s unusual choking-sound vocals, Niemeyer’s muted, choppy, buzzsaw guitars, dark metallic riffs, and rapid-fire drumming. The band are also responsible for creating the wild, zombie mascot Martha Splatterhead, whose likeness (created by Niemeyer) adorns most of their albums and many of their promotional items. The Accüsed recorded five albums, three EPs, and over 100 songs between their 1981 inception and 1990s hiatus.
The current line-up consists of Brad Mowen (also a member of Master Musicians of Bukakke and former member of Burning Witch and Asva), Dorando Hodous (also a member of Lesbian), Mike Peterson and Niemeyer.

Time: 7:30pm
Admission: £15 in advance. All scala events are 18+ unless otherwise stated.
Tickets: 08444 771 000 or Scalas box office between 10am and 6pm Mon-Fri

Dark clouds are forming | A Storm Of Light prepare to release their second album

20 Jul

Brooklyn’s A Storm Of Light are back with their second full length Forgive Us Our Trespasses which will be coming out on double LP and CD on Neurot this autumn. The album follows their 2008’s And We Wept The Black Ocean Within.

The album finds its power through a dramatic combination of melodies, moods and textures, ensuring that while things are as heavy and cataclysmic as fans would expect, the devastating effects rely on interwoven melodies and graceful shifts in timbre, instead of a stream of identikit riffs.

Comprised of Josh Graham (Neurosis), Domenic Seita (ex-Tombs), Andy Rice and Joel Hamilton – Storm is joined by a host of carefully-chosen collaborators including vocalist Nerissa Campbell (Primitive North), the unique talents of Jarboe (Swans, World Of Skin, J2), the otherworldly spoken word segues of singer, poet and author Lydia Lunch and the mournful strings of Carla Kihlstedt (Book Of Knots, Sleepytime Gorilla Museum, 2 Foot Yard) and Marika Hughes (2 Foot Yard)

The band have made the track ‘Mignight‘ available exclusively on their myspace and website. Be sure to check it out!

Catch them on tour this autumn as they head out on the road around the UK and mainland Europe in support of this new album. If the last tour was anything to go by we can expect some pretty fantastic visuals to compliment their music. Wonderful. Here are the dates:

24 Oct – Leeds – Damnations Festival (UK)
25 Oct – Glasgow – Ivory Blacks (UK)
26 Oct – Newcastle – Trillians (UK)
27 Oct – Sheffield – Corporation (UK)
28 Oct – London – Bar Academy (UK)
30 Oct – Groningen – Simplon (HOL)
1 Nov – Rotterdam – Baroeg (HOL)
3 Nov – Moscow – 16 Tons (RUS)
5 Nov – Geneva – Usine (SWZ)
6 Nov – Bulle – Ebulliton (SWZ)
7 Nov – Den Bosch – W2 (HOL)
8 Nov – Wiesbaden – Schlachthof (GER)
9 Nov – Hamburg – Hafenklang (GER)
11 Nov – Rome – Init (ITA)

I am a fan of their first record but I believe this one to be even better and all the more mighty! The intricate arrangements of the instruments and male and female vocals as well as samples are all perfectly combined, fleshing out their existing style to dramatic effect. This is one hell of a powerful record, which sounds like a band who are at their prime!

The Accüsed to release a brand new album – The Curse Of Martha Splatterhead

17 Jul

The pioneering kings of Splatter Rock The Accüsed are back from the wrong side of the grave with their first album in over six years.
(1 of 7)-2
Accüsed axe slinger and founding member Tommy Niemeyer has resurrected the unholy Splatterbeast with a new line up that is an efficient killing machine. Comprising Brad Mowen on vocals ( Master Musicians of Bukakke and former member of Burning Witch and Asva), Dorando Hodous on bass (Lesbian), Mike Peterson on drums and of course Niemeyer himself wielding the guitar like a chainsaw ready to slay blood thirsty zombies (I also watch way too many zombie horror films!)

The true return of the band’s mascot Martha Splatterhead is upon us. Over the last few years, surviving deaths, trends, and severe obstacles The Accüsed have returned to rightfully reclaim the Thrash Metal throne.

accused cd coverThe new album The Curse of Martha Splatterhead contains even more face ripping riffs, more brutal throat shredding and more intestinal morbid devourment than ever before. Fourteen songs clocking in at 29 min. FASTER, MORE VICIOUS, MORE BRUTAL. Crushing production courtesy of Billy Anderson (Melvins, Neurosis, Eyehategod, Brutal Truth, Sleep etc.)

They will be playing at Supersonic Festival on July 25th and thanks to the lovely ladies at Capsule, there will be another chance to catch them at the London, Scala with Corrupted and Thorr’s Hammer on Sunday 26th.

Ill leave you with a quote from the mighty Greg Anderson (of Southern Lord, Sunn 0))) and Ascend fame)…

“If it wasn’t for The Accüsed I literally would not be here. The
Accüsed and guitarist Tommy Niemeyer were basically responsible for
turning me onto hardcore/punk and underground metal. If it wasn’t
for me witnessing The Accüsed slay the audience, and me, in 1985 I
may not be writing this today!”

Calling all “Splatter Heads”…get ready to engage in a full throttle aural assault, of the best kind!
