Power Trip: Texas crossover act delivers debut LP; opening track playing at Pitchfork

26 Apr

Channeling the old-school energy of legendary acts like Cro-Mags, Nuclear Assault and Leeway through modern thrash warfare, Texas crossover battalion POWER TRIP has wrapped up production on their debut LP for Southern Lord and have distributed the details on the beast that is Manifest Decimation.

Amidst massive touring over the past five years, and having unloaded a cache of demos, splits and D.I.Y. releases along the way, the high-powered metallic punk/hardcore attack of Dallas-based POWER TRIP caught the attention of Southern Lord, who brought the crew on-board for the release of their first full-length. Recorded by Arthur Rizk and Daniel Schmuck in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and Argyle, Texas, and produced, mixed, and mastered by Arthur Rizk at Solomon’s Gate in Philadelphia, the eight tracks on Manifest Decimation hurtle the band’s “steel, speed and destruction” ethos direct at the jugular with thirty-five minutes of crossover intensity that sounds like it was excavated from a 1987 time capsule with sixteen tons of radioactive dynamite. The intense album layout was created by Italian artist Paolo “Madman” Girardi, completing this vile package for delivery via Southern Lord on June 10th, 2013.
The opening and title track Manifest Decimation has been let off the chain via Pitchfork – FREE THE BEAST HERE.

Manifest Decimation Track Listing:
1. Manifest Decimation
2. Heretic’s Fork
3. Conditioned to Death
4. Murderer’s Row
5. Crossbreaker
6. Drown
7. Power Trip
8. The Hammer of Doubt

POWER TRIP‘s forthcoming recording and live schedule will be continually updated through the coming months as more details on Manifest Decimation are released.

Neurot Recordings to reissue seminal debut solo LP from Steve Von Till

26 Apr

For thirteen years now, the Neurot Recordings family has not only survived, but has thrived, especially in recent years, the label’s flourishing roster of forward-thinking artists constantly expanding. Amidst releases from internationally-renowned acts Ufomammut, Isis, Shrinebuilder and of course Neurosis, the clan has also aided in exposing impressive acts from the more underground corners of the scene including Across Tundras, US Christmas, Ides of Gemini, Oxbow, A Storm of Light, Amenra and others. Along the way the members of Neurosis, founders of Neurot, have also spawned an incredible lineage of solo recordings, performances, and joint collaborations amongst themselves and with a close-knit band of other dedicated artists.

Marking the origin of Neurot Recordings was one seminal release which has remained out-of-print for years, but As The Crow Flies — the debut solo recording from Neurosis’ STEVE VON TILL — will soar once again this Spring, as the label prepares a reissue of this seminal outing. This nearly forty-five minute composition bore a vast contrast to Neurosis’ massive, plodding riffing and percussion, instead feeling more like a mental excursion into the outer realms of consciousness; an ambient, eclectic, organic and overall honest harvest from the mind of its creator.

Bearing updated artwork and packaging, Neurot will unveil a 2013 reissue of As The Crow Flies on LP, CD and digital delivery in the UK/Europe on May 13th, precisely thirteen years since its initial release.
As The Crow Flies Track Listing:
1. Stained Glass
2. We All Fall
3. Remember
4. Warning of a Storm
5. Twice Born
6. Midheaven
7. Shadows in Stone

Dead in the Dirt: Writing process of debut LP complete

24 Apr

Atlanta-based grindcore trio DEAD IN THE DIRT have completed the writing and recording process for their pending debut LP, which promises to fully harness their latest blast-laden auditory dissent.

DEAD IN THE DIRT travelled seven hundred miles north to record with Andy Nelson (Weekend Nachos) at Bricktop Recording Studio in Chicago the second week of April, armed with a barrage of new songs which will be delivered later in the year as their first full-length release, The Blind Hole. Following their initial 2010-released Vold EP, DITD caught the attention of Southern Lord, who hooked up with the band immediately for the release of their Fear 7”, which bore some of the heaviest music of the year, taking morose lessons from His Hero Is Gone and Cursed to horrifically relentless levels of blasting intensity. The label will continue the tradition, and The Blind Hole will see release through Southern Lord later in the year.

A band who continually takes their societal and politically-based contempt out on the road, DEAD IN THE DIRT have taken part in multiple Southern Lord and The Power Of The Riff events and tours over the past two years, including both East Coast and West Coast US tours as direct support for SUNN O))) in 2012. With much more still in the works for the coming months, a live assault throughout the Midwest and parts of the Southeast US has already been confirmed for the majority of the month of May. The band will also take on Europe for a full month this October and November.

Stay tuned for constant transmissions on DITD. For now endure live footage, and check out the band’s Vold and Fear EP’s via Bandcamp.

Zolle: Whacked-out Italian doom deviants release debut LP’s opening romp

24 Apr

Blazing out of the backwoods of Bruzzelle, Italy, born in homage to plow and harvest — harvesting riffs, plowing grappa — the ZOLLE duo will release their belligerently unhinged full-length debut of rural rampage in plenty of time for tomato season.

With only two members, somehow the magical ZOLLE still features members of Zu, Morkobot, OvO, One Dimensional Man and more. The bandits’ self-titled album stumbles triumphantly through inebriated off-kilter riff marches, schizokiller percussive thunder, disharmony and distressed builds abound, the pummeling concoction void of a goddamn human voice for its duration. There’s nowhere better on the near-half-hour colostomy of Zolle to let you all know where we’re coming from than just hitting play on this thing.

This Is Not A Scene premiered the album-opening tune last week. The band would like to inform you it is called “Trakthor,” except they’re an instrumental band, making it impossible to actually tell you. But the word “Trakthor” only translates from Italian to English as, “Trakthor,” so there’s no harm done.
Plow grappa and blast “Trakthor” following this direct link:

Supernatural Cat — the Italian underground label run by Malleus Rock Art Lab, the artist collective featuring two members of the psychedelic doom trio Ufomammut — will set Zolle loose on May 13th.

Formed by Marcello Lan (Morkobot), who lays down the meaty riffs, and counterpart Stefano, who beefs things up on drums and xylophone, ZOLLE commenced work on their debut album throughout the summer of 2012, and in just two months they had the music ready to commit to tape. Recorded in September of the same year by Michelangelo Roberti at Mizkey Studio (Morkobot) and mastered by Giovanni Versari (Zu, Morkobot, OvO, One Dimensional Man), performed almost entirely live, the drums are of considerable proportion and made of copper, and the amplifier is an old digital model of the ’50s which makes for a mammoth sound. In addition, Urlo (Ufomammut/Supernatural Cat) and Roberto Rizzo (Quasiviri/Runi) make guest infiltrations bearing drunken gifts of synth throughout the duration of Zolle’s ruckus.

# IDES OF GEMINI w/ Boris, Deafheaven

IDES OF GEMINI will be touring in support of their transcendental doom masterwork, Constantinople, released via Neurot Recordings last Spring.

“Ides Of Gemini exists in a spiritually distinct realm from everyone, ever. There’s plenty here to immerse oneself in.” – ROCK A ROLLA

“There is a metallic-filtered kinship here to Cocteau Twins and Mazzy Star: this is gorgeous stuff, full of promise, and heading toward true greatness.” – TERRORIZER

“It’s easy to see Constantinople as a cathartic exorcism of demons. This also means that it’s an incredibly cohesive album that is best enjoyed as a whole, the songs best understood in context of the ones that came before. This is an impressionistic interpretation of doom.” – THE SLEEPING SHAMAN

Philm European tour well underway

24 Apr
Dave Lombardo’s Los Angeles based power trio, PHILM, will be hitting the rousing European music scene to introduce progressive rock enthusiasts to their decadent, all-powerful show experience. The bands appearances will kick off in Athens, Greece on April 20th 2013, and will carry them through Turkey, Italy, Zurich and finally, The Netherlands.

Philm’s drummer, Dave Lombardo comments:

“I have traveled through Europe numerous times with SLAYER, FANTOMAS & GRIP INC. It’s beautiful country and the fans are exceptional. I am beyond excited to bring PHILM to the region and introduce my fans to yet another part of my musical journey.”

See PHILM on tour at the following shows:
April 24 – Bologna, Italy – Locomotiv Club
April 26 – Zurich, Switzerland – Rote Fabrik
April 27 – Amstelveen, Holland – The Headway Festival / P60
April 28 – Eindhoven, Holland – The Dynamo

About PHILM:
Dave Lombardo-Drums
Gerry Nestler-Vocal & Guitar
Pancho Tomaselli-Bass

Scaling his infamous drum set down to a four piece kit, reminiscent of his drumming mentors of the late 60’s, is certainly a shock to Dave Lombardo enthusiasts whom have justifiably typecast the exceptional talent to the genre he helped trail-blaze. But, the depth of his musical aptitude is much more than what has come to be known as his signature sound. Lombardo’s prodigious skill and affinity for heavy, penetrating grooves birthed a temperamental, highly gifted child: PHILM. A sonic experimentation that would not only impress his musical heroes of past, but is currently leveling the psychedelic/progressive rock partisans of today.

An obvious reason for this multi-genre amalgamation can be directly linked to the gentlemen that play alongside Lombardo in PHILM – bassist Pancho Tomaselli is a long-time member of funk rockers, War. Singer/guitarist Gerry Nestler fronts prog metallists, Civil Defiance.

The three innovative musicians have masterfully revived the concept of the Power Trio. Their often improvised live set can find their audience entranced by a tonal journey that is both awe-inspiring and haunting. PHILM easily satisfies the palate of the most vexed of neo-psychedelia fans.

Master Musicians of Bukkake reveal details of their new album

22 Apr

ImageImage by Alison Scarpulla

Master Musicians of Bukkake recently unveiled details of their new full-length entitled Far West which is due for release 10 June through Important Records. Today we dig deeper and reveal the context and hint at the sounds and influences of this wonderous new record.

“Go west, young man.” –Horace Greeley

On Far West the Master Musicians of Bukkake mark a turn from their Totem Trilogy. If the Totems were an expression of yang energy, then the Far West cycle is the yin that took seed within the trilogy.

What happens when you travel so far east looking for enlightenment that you pass your destination and are headed west again? The mania of being lost in the mountains of the Cascade Corridor, searching aimlessly for the Northern Pacific coast. A spiritual Donner party of sorts, feeding off fantasy and mirages and imaginary shamans. Far West is the soundtrack to this expedition to the caves of light we all travel into with hopes of acquiring redemption, only to realise our bodies have dissolved—gone like rain from the sky, snow from the ground, thoughts from the mind.

The sound of Far West is a progressive folk record inspired by Paul Giovanni’s Wicker Man soundtrack, early Canterbury prog folk, the suspenseful soundtracks of Goblin and Ennio Morricone, Gerry Goldsmith’s interwoven dark orchestrations, and Pacific Northwest folk rock. The Master Musicians of Bukkake take an earthly and shamanistic approach to these influences and infuse it with Krautrock pulses interweaved with acoustic guitars, intricately layered rhythms, hazed-out modular analog synths, brassy stabs, and cultish choirs. A true psychedelic, audiophile experience to dissolve your body in.

Far West also features backing vocals by Sub Pop! recording artists Rose Windows, a deluxe cover illustration by Simon Fowler (see below) and the amazing photography of Alison Scarpulla.

Master Musicians of Bukkake is:

David Abramson: percussion, drums, tef, shaman shakers, green fog

B.R.A.D: percussion, vocals, candles, sights unseen

Don McGreevy: percussion, drums, 12 string electric and acoustic guitar, mellotron, bass, brass arrangements

Randall Dunn: korg analog synths, mellotron, divining rod, water seeking foolishness

Milky: electric and acoustic guitar, synths, vocals, mossy fuzz

Timm Mason: electric guitar, serge modular synth, electric bass, insects
